Welded Mesh and Cut and Bend for Coastal Builds in Durban and Richards Bay

KwaZulu-Natal builds in a marine environment. From the Durban waterfront and Umhlanga to the industrial and port developments around Richards Bay, concrete on the coast lives with salt-laden air, high humidity and heavy summer rain for the whole of its service life. Reinforcement that is suitable inland can be the wrong choice within sight of the sea.

That is why the reinforcing supplier matters as much as the design. RMS Durban, based in Pinetown, supplies welded mesh, cut and bend reinforcing steel and stock lengths to contractors and developers across KwaZulu-Natal, with the documentation an engineer needs to sign off a coastal structure.

Why coastal specification is different

Concrete protects the steel embedded in it, but coastal exposure places extra demands on that protection. Salt aerosol from the sea accelerates corrosion of any steel it reaches, constant moisture finds its way through even fine cracks, and temperature cycling opens those cracks over time. Rust bleeding through an exposed concrete finish is visible, and expensive to remediate.

Consulting engineers deal with this through the durability provisions of SANS 10100, classifying exposed coastal sites in the higher corrosion classes and responding with increased concrete cover, corrosion protection for the reinforcement, or both. As a contractor or developer you do not set that specification yourself, but you do need a supplier who can deliver exactly what the engineer has specified, on programme. We covered the same challenge for the Western Cape in welded mesh sourcing and delivery in Cape Town.

Welded mesh for slabs, surface beds and pavements

Welded mesh is the quickest way to reinforce wide, flat concrete: surface beds, suspended slabs, road pavements, retaining walls, box culverts and drains, and precast or tilt-up panels. RMS mesh is made from cold-rolled deformed wire, joined by electric resistance welding, and complies with SANS 1024, with a minimum proof stress of 485 MPa and a tensile strength of 510 MPa (BS 4482 compliant).

RMS Durban stocks the standard square mesh references from Ref 100 to Ref 888 in 6 m by 2.4 m sheets, with selected lighter references also available in rolls. Every sheet is clearly labelled for identification on site. For exposed coastal work, galvanised reinforcement is available on request; confirm the range and lead time with the branch when you enquire.

Two site notes. RMS does not cut mesh to size in the yard or on collection, for health, safety and quality reasons; smaller pieces are cut on site, allowing for laps where sheets overlap. And RMS supplies mesh but does not install it.

Cut and bend for beams, columns and foundations

Where the structure needs individually shaped bars, RMS Durban cuts and bends reinforcing steel to your bending schedule so it arrives ready to fix. Both grades are supplied to SANS 920:2011: high tensile Y bars (450 MPa, deformed) for structural work and mild steel R bars (250 MPa, smooth) for lighter applications, in diameters from 8 mm to 40 mm, with 6 mm on request. Stock lengths are available in 6 m, 12 m and 13 m.

Cut and bend is made to order, so it needs an accurate bending schedule and processing time. Early planning is what keeps a coastal programme on track, especially where galvanised reinforcement is specified.

Transparency on every load

The Durban branch has built its local reputation on knowing exactly what you are getting. Customers receive detailed information including bar marks (Arma schedules) and tonnages supplied, so there is full visibility of the steel ordered and delivered. Test certificates for reinforcing steel and welded mesh are available on request, confirming compliance with the relevant standards and providing the supporting documentation required for project quality and compliance records.

How RMS Durban keeps KwaZulu-Natal sites moving

Delivery. Lead times typically range from 3 to 5 working days, depending on stock availability, order size and fabrication requirements. Urgent orders are accommodated where possible, and timelines are confirmed upfront.

Site visits. Depending on scope, RMS can arrange for a sales representative or supervisor to visit your project before you order, to review foundations, columns, ring beams and other elements and advise on quantities and stock.

Accounts for larger projects. Account applications are available for qualifying customers, and the branch guides you through the documentation.

Additional reinforcing products. Brickforce in 75 mm and 150 mm, binding wire in 1.6 mm and 3.15 mm, rebar caps from 8 mm to 25 mm, chair spacers from 25 mm to 100 mm, concrete cover blocks, DPC, reinforcing bar couplers and hand-tied piling cages or pre-assembled rebar.

Fixing. Steel fixing teams and site supervision are available for RMS-supplied rebar.

From residential builds to large civil and infrastructure work, including the two bridge structures on the N3 corridor at Key Ridge, RMS Durban supports contractors across the province.

Ordering for a Durban or Richards Bay project

Send the branch your drawings, reinforcement schedule or material list. For mesh, the online Mesh Calculator gives a quick first estimate of sheets required, and standard references can be ordered from the RMS online shop. For cut and bend, upload your bending schedule with the quote request so processing time and delivery can be confirmed. Ask about galvanised reinforcement and test certificates at the same time so they are built into the lead time.
