Welded Mesh and Cut and Bend in Johannesburg: Fast, Reliable Supply for Gauteng Sites

Welded mesh sheets and cut and bend reinforcing steel at the RMS Johannesburg branch in Germiston

Construction in Gauteng moves fast, and a site in Johannesburg, Germiston, the East Rand or Pretoria cannot afford to wait for reinforcement. Slabs are programmed to pour on a date, and the mesh and cut and bend rebar have to be on site, correctly labelled and matched to the drawings, before the concrete truck arrives.

RMS Johannesburg exists for exactly that. From the branch in Germiston, RMS supplies welded mesh, cut and bend reinforcing steel and stock lengths to contractors and developers across Gauteng, backed by a national branch network and the same quality standards on every order.

Welded mesh: ready-made reinforcement for slabs and surface beds

Welded mesh is a grid of steel wires welded at every intersection, supplied as a ready-made sheet. It is the fastest way to reinforce wide, flat elements such as surface beds, suspended slabs, driveways, road pavements, retaining walls, box culverts and precast panels, because a sheet is placed in minutes where individual bars would take hours to tie.

RMS Johannesburg stocks the standard square mesh references from Ref 100 to Ref 888, including the special Ref 156 (100 by 100 mm spacing). Standard sheets are 6 m by 2.4 m, and selected lighter references are also available in rolls for easier handling. Other mesh types can be sourced on request, subject to order volume and lead time.

Every sheet of RMS welded mesh is manufactured from cold-rolled deformed wire, joined by electric resistance welding, and complies with SANS 1024, with a minimum proof stress of 485 MPa and a tensile strength of 510 MPa (BS 4482 compliant). Sheets are clearly labelled, so the reference is easy to identify on site.

One practical point that catches many first-time buyers: for health, safety and quality reasons RMS does not cut mesh to size in the yard or on collection. Where a smaller piece is needed, it is cut on site. Allow for laps where sheets overlap so the reinforcement stays continuous across the slab.

Cut and bend: rebar delivered ready to fix

Where a slab, beam, column or footing needs individually shaped bars, cut and bend is the answer. RMS cuts and bends reinforcing steel to your bending schedule so it arrives ready to install, saving time on site and reducing waste from cutting stock lengths by hand.

RMS supplies both grades used in South African construction to SANS 920:2011: high tensile Y bars (450 MPa, deformed, for structural reinforcement where bond with the concrete matters most) and mild steel R bars (250 MPa, smooth, for lighter applications). Diameters run from 8 mm to 40 mm, with 6 mm on request, and stock lengths are available in 6 m, 12 m and 13 m for on-site fabrication or phased installation. Shape codes follow the current South African schedule, which has been aligned with British standards, so a schedule drawn to either convention can be processed.

RMS does not manufacture steel. It sources quality steel, processes it to specification, and supplies it with full traceability and batch certificates, so the material certificate for every delivery is available for the engineer’s records.

Two things are worth planning for. First, cut and bend is made to order, so it needs an accurate bending schedule and processing time; early planning is what keeps a delivery on programme. Second, galvanising is available for rebar products on request, but not for mesh.

How RMS Johannesburg keeps Gauteng sites moving

Stock on hand. The Germiston branch keeps selected stock items available for immediate supply. Cut and bend and custom fabrication are made to order, and stock availability is confirmed at quotation stage so there are no surprises.

Delivery lead times. Standard delivery in the Johannesburg area is typically 3 to 7 working days, depending on product type, order size and fabrication requirements. Larger or urgent orders may need additional scheduling, which is confirmed when the quotation is issued.

Quantity help. Send RMS your bending schedule or project specification and the branch will help you work out the correct quantities, which reduces waste and avoids a second delivery for a shortfall. The online Mesh Calculator and Rebar Calculator give a quick first estimate before you enquire.

More than mesh and rebar. The same branch supplies brickforce (SANS approved, 75 mm and 150 mm non-galvanised, with 230 mm and galvanised options on request), binding wire in 1.6 mm and 3.15 mm gauges, rebar caps, chair spacers from 25 mm to 100 mm, green plastic DPC, reinforcing bar couplers and piling cages or pre-assembled rebar.

Fixing on site. For RMS-supplied rebar, RMS can provide steel fixing teams and site supervision. Note that this applies to RMS steel only, and that RMS supplies welded mesh but does not install it.

Projects supported across Gauteng

From schools and student accommodation to roads and large infrastructure, RMS Johannesburg supports contractors and developers across the province, with technical and remote support available for specification questions before and during the build.

Ordering welded mesh and cut and bend in Johannesburg

For welded mesh, you can order standard references directly from the RMS online shop or request a quote from the branch. For cut and bend, upload your bending schedule with your quote request so the branch can confirm processing time and delivery. Stock lengths can be quoted from the same enquiry.

Frequently asked questions

What are the delivery lead times for welded mesh and cut and bend in Johannesburg?

Standard delivery lead time is typically 3 to 7 working days, depending on product type, order size and fabrication requirements. Larger or urgent orders may require additional scheduling, which is confirmed when your quotation is issued.

Is welded mesh stock readily available at the Johannesburg branch?

Yes. Selected stock items are available for immediate supply. Cut and bend rebar and custom fabrication are made to order. Stock availability is always confirmed at quotation stage.

Does RMS cut welded mesh to size in Johannesburg?

No. For health, safety and quality reasons RMS does not cut mesh to size in the yard or on collection. Where a smaller piece is needed, mesh is cut to size on site, allowing for laps where sheets overlap.

What is the difference between R bars and Y bars?

R bars are smooth round mild steel bars used in lighter applications where bonding strength is less critical. Y bars are ribbed high tensile bars designed for a stronger grip with concrete, and are the most commonly used bars in structural reinforcement.
