Project Overview
The Sonvanger Solar project is bringing new renewable-energy capacity to the Free State, and RMS is supplying the reinforcing steel behind its concrete work. Working with main contractor Ablon Construction, the RMS Bloemfontein branch supplies, cuts, bends and delivers reinforcing steel and welded mesh for the project near Theunissen.
Solar infrastructure relies on a large number of accurately built concrete foundations and bases, each repeated to the same specification across the site. That makes reliable, correctly fabricated reinforcement, delivered in step with the build, central to keeping the programme moving. To date the project has called for around 80 tons of steel from the Bloemfontein branch.
Project Challenges
A build of this kind places specific demands on the reinforcing supply:
- A high number of repeated foundations and bases, each needing reinforcement fabricated to the same exact specification
- Cutting and bending to the engineer’s schedules so steel arrives ready to fix, not to be worked on site
- Deliveries paced to match construction on an active site outside Theunissen
- Steady supply of both reinforcing steel and welded mesh from a single local branch
RMS Solution
RMS Bloemfontein supplies the project from its own yard in the Free State, cutting and bending reinforcing steel to the engineer’s specifications and delivering it to site along with welded mesh. The branch backs this up with on-site delivery and technical support, giving the contractor a local point of contact for scheduling and any queries as the work progresses. Handling supply, cutting, bending and delivery through one branch keeps the reinforcement accurate and the programme predictable.
